Abstract

Introduction: Hospitalization anxiety is a crisis condition in sick children who have to be hospitalized because of the adaptation process to new environmental stressors, strangers, fear, and painful surgical procedures. As many as 80% of toddlers in inpatient rooms at SMC Telogorejo Hospital showed anxiety due to hospitalization in the form of fear when seeing nurses, crying, kicking, rebelling, and hitting when nursing actions are carried out, causing delays in the treatment process and providing nursing care. This study aims to analyze the effect of storytelling therapy and cheerful music therapy on the anxiety level of hospitalized children under five. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental approach with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The population of this study was 110 toddler who was treated at SMC Telogorejo Hospital, Semarang. A total of 86 respondents were obtained based on the purposive sampling technique and the sample size was calculated using the Slovin formula with an error tolerance of 5%. The data was collected using the DASS 42 questionnaire. The first group received the storytelling intervention and the second group received cheerful music therapy. Data analysis used paired t-test to determine the effect of each variable and an independent t-test to analyze differences in the effectiveness of the two interventions. Results: Independent T-test analysis obtained a p-value of 0.0001 with a decrease in the average level of anxiety after storytelling respondents by 7.4, and a decrease in the average level of anxiety after the respondents were given cheerful music by 10.33, so cheerful music is more effective in reducing anxiety in children under five. Conclusion: cheerful music is more effective in reducing hospitalization in children under five compared to storytelling.
